Sea Shore

Flat scallop shells from the local after a storm a few years ago. In the spirit of ‘Reduce, re-use, recycle’, they have a new life as book covers, around, what else, a guide to the seashore.

“Plastic, plastic everywhere”

Handmade puppets, a mini installation, inspired by The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, a poem I thought very long but my Mother made me read it!

Seemed like time for a makeover; over 200 years since it was written, what would the Ancient Mariner say now?

Altered Book
'Hares and white rabbits'

A saying in our family, the first thing said on the first of the month, to bring luck. Research discovered that there are variations of this in many families and finding a glass dome with rabbit ears was the crowning glory.

Altered Book
'For his mother'

A small book, memories of a young  naval officer who died in WW2 originally created for his mother. A difficult book to alter because of the content, Printed on each page, gradually replacing Tommys face with a poppy. Re-covered in leather to emulate a notebook.

Altered Book
Jasper Johns: “Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it.”
A pretty good mantra for altered books, this one is an old geography text book, the difficulty with an
altered book is deciding when to stop altering it.

Lead or Dead
After Anselm Kiefer, a Lead book, symbol of the discarded knowledge of history. 400 children died from lead poisoning between 2010 and 2013 as a result of small scale gold mining in Zamfara, Nigeria.

Doris in Danger
In Greek mythology, Doris, an Oceanid, was a sea-nymph whose name represented the bounty of
the sea. This book was created in 2015 from stuff collected on the seashore – us artists have been aware of plastics
and pollution in the ocean for a while now!

Driftwood bookstack
A mini installation of books with driftwood covers and Coptic binding.
